‘Ode to Joy’ Concert Review

17 July, 2013

The WA Youth Orchestra’s concert on Saturday evening featured four soloists, two choirs, one international conductor and 80 of WA’s most talented young musicians.

Also on the program was the world première of a brand new work by young Perth composer and rising star Rebecca Erin Smith (pictured above with conductor Tze Law Chan). Trained as a classical violist and pianist whilst also an active member of the Perth indie-pop contemporary music scene, Rebecca recently completed a Bachelor of Music with honours at WAAPA and describes her music as “neoclassical quirk.” She has just been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music and undertake a two year Master of Music degree, so this will be the last commission before she heads off.
